How To Defend Your Computer Against Nasty Attacks
Any one that hasn’t been living in cave the past few years know about this wonderful invention called the Internet. The Internet provides a vast assortment of benefits. But there is a dark side. The Internet also is a dangerous source for adware, spyware, malware and viruses. If you are spending any amount of time online, then it pays to know about these evil entities so you can better defeat them.
Probably the least dangerous of these, but still terribly annoying is adware. These are programs that are loaded onto your computer through various methods. Sometimes when you download a free application, it will come filled with adware. Meaning that every time you run the software, you will be presented with advertisements for various products.
Spyware is similar. It is software that searches your computer for anything it can use as information to try and convince you buy things. Many contextual ads are based on spyware on your computer. This is like a guy who sneaks into your house to find out what brand of shoes you like, and then sends you fliers in the mail for that kind of specific shoe. Again, not dangerous, but frustrating.
Computer viruses are different. They aren’t interested in selling anything. They just want to destroy everything in their path like a swarm of angry biblical locusts. They spread just like human contagion, causing the extinction of whole populations.
The final thing to worry about is malware. This is slightly different from viruses, in that it spreads differently. These are programs you download, usually hidden in another program. These are created for the sole purpose of ruining your computer.
The safest way to protect yourself is to get a good, robust anti-virus program. While there are many free ones available, it is much better to spend twenty or thirty dollars for a years subscription. That way you’ll be protected, as these anti-virus software is constantly updated to deal with the latest threats.
