Is there an antivirus program that will delete adware and viruses for free?

I am running windows xp and have recently downloaded several programs that say they are free but they only scan for free they don’t remove anything. You have to pay for that service. If someone can tell me where to get a free copy of one that will remove the garbage let me know. If it works you will surely get ten points…

Please help I can’t afford to buy one right now…
